Keeping Your Virtual Students Engaged!

consulting, welcoming, virtual classroomNow that you have a virtual classroom in session, how do you keep everybody connected...not in a technical sense, but interactively and collectively.  There are techniques you can use which are relatively easy but if not used, you will loose the interest of your participants and the value of your content.

Welcoming, introductions, and code of conduct:

  1. It's important, when you start your virtual class, to welcome the participants.  You can do this as they enter the virtual classroom, or collectively with a "warm welcome to everyone."  Regardless, if you acknowledge their arrival they will know you are able to see them "sign in" as the enter.  This greeting will set the stage for a more comfortable climate.
  2. Next, it is important to do a brief introduction.  It is imperative you introduce yourself as the facilitator and the guide through this process.  You should take the time to have the students, at a minimum, introduce themselves, where they live and if they are an intact team, what their job or department is responsible for.
  3. It is equally important to establish a code of conduct.  It may sound mundane but think about organizations that have them and the important part they play.  A uniform military code of conduct, the scout's code, and all highly functioning teams have a code of conduct which the team agrees to by concordance.  Yours may be a bit softer; it should at least be by consensus.  It can be basic things such as not multitasking while the class is in session.  Turning off cell phones.  Not having other windows open on their computers while the class is in session.

These three basic steps will ensure you get your class off on a good solid footing.  The real trick is to keep them engaged, and more specifically actively engaged.  If you are doing this globally, you will also have to think about the cultures of the people you are interacting with as well.  This will make a significant difference in how you approach the session.
